in memoriam

My mom has had to have both of her German shepherds put to sleep in the past year. Ophelia, on the left, was first. She was the mother of Harriet, on the right, who passed away yesterday. Both dogs were originally raised by our family for the Seeing Eye. Ophelia was used for their breeding program instead of as a guide. Harriet was from her first litter. We got Ophie back after she did several litters, and Harriet was rejected as a candidate because of her weird neurotic temperament. It turned out later that she was epileptic, so that was for the best. The poor thing has been on pretty strong doses of seizure meds for many years now, and she was kind of dulled because of it. It’s impressive she made it to the age she was, which was about 13. My mom still has her fat little beagle, Snoopy, so hopefully she won’t be too lonesome, especially since my youngest sister has also just moved out with her son. Good thing we know of all kinds of dogs needing homes, so when she’s ready, we can get her another pup to love.

Miss you dogs. XO.

  1. Losing a pet is like losing a member of the family, you get so attached and you miss them like crazy.
